HTC-212: Vials of soil samples

Donor: University of California, Berkeley Geotechnical Faculty and Staff

Vials of soil samples

This is a collection of selected soils donated as part of the Time Capsule Initiative organized by the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).

The selection includes soils that have been extensively characterized in the literature, soils from well-known deposits, or major projects.

The soil collection is not intended to be comprehensive. Instead, given space limitations, the intent was to assemble a representative selection of well-recognized soils that are available at the University of California at Berkeley Geotechnical Engineering laboratories as part of the Faculty's research and consulting projects.

The selected soils list consists of:

1. Monterey 0 Sand

2. Ottawa C109 Sand

3. Hokksund Sand

4. Toyoura Sand

5. Port of Nice Silty Sand

6. San Francisco Bay Mud

7. Bentonite

8. Leda Clay

9. Teton Dam Soil

10. High Aswan Dam Dune Sand

11. Lunar Soil Simulant ( <2 micron powdered basalt)

The donation was made in May 2026 on behalf of the current UC Berkeley Geotechnical Faculty, Teaching and Research Staff: Norman Abrahamson, Adda Athanasopoulos-Zekkos, Jonathan D. Bray, Jiarui Chen, Mohammad Hallal, Robert Kayen, Michael Riemer, Nicholas Sitar, Kenichi Soga, and Dimitrios Zekkos.
