As early as 1925, K. Terzaghi's fundamental book "Earthworks Mechanics on the Basis of Soil Physics" was published in Vienna, which is considered to be the birth of modern soil mechanics. Before the publication of this book, the design of foundations and retaining structures was based almost exclusively on empirical rules of thumb. In it, Terzaghi summarised the research he had carried out, including during his time at Robert College in Istanbul. The book marks the beginning of modern soil mechanics exactly 100 years ago.
